This Concept Map, created with IHMC CmapTools, has information related to: Stella Norman's Module 1 Map, Dilemma 1: Engagine Diverse Learners Issues: Ms. Anderson's lack of comfort and knowledge in the area of science and math. The classroom is diverse in regard to ablilty. Ms. Anderson wants to integrate reading and writing into the lessons. Related Learner Centered Principles #3: Construction of Knowledge - Mrs. Anderson must link what she has learned in the past in relation to science and math and use the materials she has on hand to create meaningful activities for students. This principle is also related to students making connections between science, reading and writing in that links can be made by students when Ms. Anderson uses strategies to help them integrate through mapping, categorizing, and thematic organization. #12 Individual Differences in learning - Ms. Anderson must continue to discover how her students learn best so she can adapt her lessons and use varying instructional methods and materials., Dilemma 2 Losing control of hands on activities Ms. Anderson is concerned that she will lose control when conducting hands-on science activities with her students. Related Learner Centered Principles #10. Developmental influences on learning- taking into account the development/maturity of students and not giving them an activity that is too complex will help with controling the situation. Ms. Anderson should try simpler or shorter hands on activities to start with and then build up to more complex and longer tasks. This will help both her and her students' comfort and development in the area. #11 - Social influences on learning - considering the influence of social interaction, interpersonal relations, and communication with others. Ms. Anderson owes it to her students to use hands-on activities with them because of the positive learning climate that these types of activities promote., Dilemma 3 Knowing what students understand Ms. Anderson is concerned about assessment and determining what her students are learning and understanding. Related Learner Centered Principles #14 - Standards and Assessment - In order to best serve her students and determine their level of understanding Ms. Anderson can use standardized assessments, and develop performance and self assessment tools for herself and her students. This assessment must be on-going throughout units and concepts in order to keep herself and her students informed about their individual progress and so that each of them can make adjustments and modifications when necessary. She also must consider principles 1 - 6 the cognitive and metacognitive factors that should guide her instructionl goals and strategies and determine her assessment goals.
