Other Senses Immediately after birth, newborns show some auditory localization, or the ability to tell where sounds are coming from. Within the first few weeks, babies can also distinguish their mother's voice from others. And, in the first month or two, babies are capable of discriminating between the basic sounds of human speech. The senses of taste, smell, and touch also seem to develop basic capabilities fairly early. For example, within the first few weeks newborns can taste the difference in sweet, sour, and bitter substance, can learn to recognize familiar odors, and are sensitive to even relatively light touches.
