Interpretation: Since the sedated orthopedic exam revealed the same results as found when alert, ligament or tendon tears or ruptures due to trauma can be ruled out. Patella laxity due to an infectious or immune- mediated cause can be ruled out since joint laxity is found only in the right stifle. One would expect to find joint laxity in more than one joint if the cause was infectious. The abnormality is isolated to the right stifle since no pain response was found in the left stifle. Also, spinal injury or nerve damage is not causing the patella luxation since no pain response was found on dorsoflexion of the tail. From the anterior-posterior radiographic view of the stifle, the patella is sitting lower in the trochlea groove of the femur than normal. From the lateral radiographic view of the femur, the borders of the trochlea groove are reduced and not as prominent as a normal trochlea groove should appear. Lateral bowing of the distal 1/3rd of the femur was seen possibly indicating a previous fracture.
