Interpretation of results The clinical pathology revealed a slight microcytic anemia, perhaps due to iron sequestration by macrophages in response to a bacterial infection. The foal also had a thrombocytosis, likely caused by epinephrine release due to stress at the time of handling. Joint fluid analysis showed an increase in both total protein and mononuclear cell count. Culture of the fluid produced Kleibsiella pneumoniae colonies The radiographs revealed lytic changes in the metatarsal bone at the distal growth plate visible on both lateral and digital palmar view; as evidenced by the eroded margins of the growth plate itself. Considerable effusion of the stifle joint was also apparent on the lateral view.
