Learning Issues: What is crepitance? Crepitance is a dry, crackling sensation produced by the grating of fractured bone fragments rubbing together, crackling of joints, or pressure on tissues containing and abnormal amount of gas. What causes pitting edema? Build up in the amount of fluid within a tissue, resulting in formation of a depression within the skin/tissue when digital pressure is applied. Severe edema with inflammatory mediators, and probably fibrin, present, to prevent the unpitting. Are foals prone to any joint diseases? Swollen painful joints can be a sign of joint ill. Newborn foals are often over at the knees or down on the fetlocks, which should correct in the first few days. Most joint problems will take longer than 2 weeks to develop. Problems commonly encountered in foals include flexural deformities (contracted tendons), physitis, acquired angular limb deformity, OCD, and infected joints (joint ill). Is it possible to see infectious arthritis in only one joint? If the infection is in its early stages, it may be seen in only one joint, but usually will progress eventually to more than one joint. What is the significance of the toe-touching lameness? Toe touching helps with indication of the severity of the pain, and classification as weight bearing or non-weight bearing lameness.
