Client education In order to conservatively manage the patellar luxation, we advise the client to minimize unsupervised, rambunctious exercise. However, leash exercise is appropriate to maintain muscle tone and prevent excessive weight gain that could further damage the joint. The pain management plan includes NSAIDs (like aspirin or rimadyl). The dog should be brought in for re-checks on a regular basis, especially if pain becomes unresponsive to pain management. If the above management plan is ineffective in controlling the dogÕs pain, surgery could be indicatedÑthis can be assessed on rechecks.
