Plan of Action: We would first like to perform a complete bovine lameness exam. This includes watching the calf move and grading the lameness. We will examine the limb, especially the toes because the most common cause of bovine lameness is footrot. Examine for sole abscesses and use hoof testers. We would also like to check the general health of the calf by performing a complete blood panel. We would like to check the function of all the vital organs and make sure nothing else was injured at the time of delivery. We would like to make sure that the calf did, in fact, receive enough colostrum and now has a sufficient immune response. We would request radiographs of the limb to locate fractures and osteolytic changes and possibly ultrasound to estimate tendon damage. A culture and sensitivity of the limb is also needed to rule out an infection. While the culture results are pending, we would like to start the calf on systemic antibiotics.
