Interpretation of Specialty exams: The PCV is within normal limits. Bovine Reference Interval 24-46% The calf is slightly hypersthenuric but this parameter cannot be evaluated because the hydration status is unknown. There is a fracture located in the left distal metacarpal region just above the medial and lateral condyles. Both metacarpal III and IV are involved in the fracture. The fracture can be characterized as simple, transverse and open (as evident from the pustular draining tract). There is evidence of secondary chronic bacterial osteomyelitis, which is supported by the positive bacterial culture, the elevation in temperature, the absence of a leukocytosis, the presence of a draining tract, and the radiographic signs. The bacterial culture from the fracture site showed a mixed infection of E.coli and S. aureus. Both of these are common ubiquitous organisms. The radiographic signs show bone involvement. There is periosteal new bone formation extending along the shaft of the diaphysis, areas of medullary and cortical bone lysis, sclerosis of the bone above and below the fracture site and focal swelling of the surrounding soft tissue.
